Milestone Celebration: Loyola High School’s Girls’ Dormitory Inauguration

On March 26, 2022, Loyola High School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, marked a transformative moment with the inauguration of its new girls' dormitory.

Funded by a grant from USAID's ASHA program, in partnership with the Midwest Jesuits and Jesuits of Eastern Africa, the facility accommodates up to 400 girls, officially turning the Jesuit-run school into a full boarding institution. This addresses critical barriers like long, unsafe commutes, boosting girls' access to quality education in a country where secondary completion rates remain low for young women.

The event drew distinguished guests. Prof. James Mdoe, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Education, Science and Technology, brought government backing and emphasis on STEM opportunities for girls.

Bishop Henry Mchamungu, Auxiliary Bishop of Dar es Salaam (ordained bishop in 2021 after priestly service since 1994), added spiritual depth with blessings, reflecting the Catholic Church's commitment to youth empowerment.

The star donor spotlight shone on USAID, represented by Mission Director Kate Somvongsiri. A seasoned development leader who joined USAID in 2002 and later negotiated major agreements in Tanzania, Somvongsiri highlighted the project's impact: “We are here today to change that” — referring to dismal secondary completion stats. Her presence underscored U.S. investment in Tanzanian education and gender equity.

Founded in 1995, Loyola High School continues its Jesuit mission of holistic formation, serving over 1,000 students with a focus on social justice and community service.

The community expressed deep gratitude to all involved. This dormitory isn't just bricks—it's a step toward brighter futures for Tanzanian girls.
